Sometimes parents obtain donated sperm, eggs or embryos to conceive a child. Parents may also contribute sperm, eggs or embryos to a surrogate mother to carry a child. In these cases, paternity or maternity DNA testing is sometimes utilized to confirm that the intended sperm fathered the child or that the donated egg was the one that became a new life.
